Our involvement in social media has exceeded expectations across the board. Our Facebook page launched in November 2009 and YouTube channel in January 2010. Our audience has grown quickly on each platform. We’ve just passed 9,300+ fans on Facebook and 63,000+ video views on YouTube.
By participating in social media, we aim to better listen to our patients and community, and enhance the strength of our organization's voice. We’ve joined the online discussion, now serve as our own news outlet, and hear from our patients on a very personal level. We’ve produced quality content that keeps the community informed and have received praise from patients for our subject matter expert videos and hospital video tours.
We were thrilled to connect with the mother of one of our pediatric patients through social media. Her daughter had spinal surgery right after we launched our Facebook page. This mom and patient had a wonderful experience with our hospital, their surgeon and the staff, and the family connected with us on Facebook to tell their story. The patient created a video montage of her story, time in our hospital, recovery, and return to normal activity. The mother shared this video and updates about her daughter’s health on our Facebook page. Then, over the mother’s birthday, she organized an online fundraising project to accept donations for our hospital as birthday gifts. We’ve loved connecting with the family, and they’ve turned into great online advocates for our system.
