Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Health Care

Tomorrow we will be announcing the five recipients of patient/caregiver scholarships to attend the social media events we're hosting in October, including the Social Media Summit (in conjunction with Ragan Communications), our Social Media Health Network member meeting and our first Social Media Residency.
The recipients of the scholarships have been chosen through a process that was a combination of crowdsourcing and expert judging. The top 15 candidates were chosen by a combination of votes and comments on our Mayo Clinic social network (you can see all of the essays here), and then a seven-judge panel drawn from our External Advisory Board voted on the finalists.
We were amazed at the response: we had 35 applicants whose essays were viewed nearly 19,000 times by visitors to the site. There were more than 1,300 votes cast and over 900 comments, and the choices for our judges were difficult because we had so many good candidates.
Thanks to everyone who applied, and to those who voted to help select the recipients. We're looking forward to a great week in October, with strong patient voices as part of the discussion of how social media tools can help promote health and improve health care.
