Sparrow Health System is a mid-Michigan-based network of hospitals and subsidiaries that has provided high-quality healthcare for more than 100 years. At Sparrow, we strive to keep the patient at the center of everything we do, and our mission is to improve the health of the people in our communities by providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. Sparrow uses the term “Caregiver” to refer to our entire team of about 10,000 physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers to signify that everyone may positively impact patient safety, quality of care and the patient experience.
Social media is just one tool we use to accomplish our mission and become nationally-recognized as a leader in quality and patient experience. We highlight Sparrow’s stories on our online newsroom and use multiple Facebook and Twitter pages to share these stories with patients, caregivers and the community. In addition to our main Facebook page, we also communicate through specialty pages, for the Sparrow Foundation, Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club and bariatric surgery patients. We also use these outlets to communicate health tips and to promote upcoming health-oriented community events, such as our Lunch with a Doctor series and forums about specific health issues.
Sparrow also uses web videos to communicate about health issues and the services we provide, like our Think Heart, Think Sparrow campaign. To date, Sparrow has produced nearly 40 videos that have been viewed by thousands of people. We use our social media channels, online newsroom and YouTube to share these videos. In 2012, we plan to launch a Sparrow News channel, a video version of our printed internal newsletter. The Sparrow News channel will be part of a multi-channel Sparrow TV microsite that will bring a new dimension to our usual storytelling. We will have multiple video channels devoted to medical information, community events and all things Sparrow.
In addition to connecting with patients through social media, we kept their needs a top priority in our ongoing roll-out of our Electronic Medical Record system, iSparrow. Through the MySparrow portal, more than 10,000 patients can access medical information, schedule appointments, and contact their physicians. As part of this, we look to expand MySparrow access, including integration of mobile app access.
Sparrow will constantly work to find the most effective ways to communicate by expanding and improving the way we use social media.
