The Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media exists to improve health globally by accelerating effective application of social media tools throughout Mayo Clinic and spurring broader and deeper engagement in social media by hospitals, medical professionals and patients.
The social media revolution is the most far-reaching communications development since Gutenberg’s printing press.
The Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media, a first-of-its-kind social media center focused on health care, builds on Mayo Clinic’s leadership among health care providers in adopting social media tools, which began with podcasting in 2005. Mayo Clinic has the most popular medical provider channel on YouTube and more than 550,000 “followers” on Twitter, as well as an active Facebook page with over 380,000 connections. With its News Blog, Podcast Blog and Sharing Mayo Clinic, a blog that enables patients and employees to tell their Mayo Clinic stories, Mayo has been a pioneer in hospital blogging.
Mayo has also used social media tools for internal communications, beginning in 2008 with a blog to promote employee conversations relating to the organization's strategic plan, and including innovative use of video and a hybrid "insider" newsletter/blog. This employee engagement contributes to Mayo Clinic being recognized among Fortune magazine's "Best Places to Work."
The Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media will accelerate adoption of social media for health-related purposes, starting at Mayo and then within health care more broadly through the Social Media Health Network. Through this work, Mayo Clinic looks to help improve health literacy, health care delivery and population health worldwide.
Mayo Clinic CEO John Noseworthy, M.D. was a key force behind Mayo Clinic establishing its Center for Social Media and the Social Media Health Network. In this address to the 2011 Social Media Summit at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Noseworthy offered his thoughts on the essential role of social media in the future of health care, and why Mayo Clinic is helping to lead the way in promoting effective adoption:
Mayo Clinic believes individuals have the right and responsibility to advocate for their own health, and that it is our responsibility to help them use social media tools to get the best information, connect with providers and with each other, and inspire healthy choices. We intend to lead the health care community in applying these revolutionary tools to spread knowledge and encourage collaboration among providers, improving health care quality everywhere.
Lead the social media revolution in health care, contributing to health and well being for people everywhere.
Mayo Clinic will be the authentic voice for patients and health care professionals, building relationships through the revolutionary power of social media.
